MANILA, Philippines — The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved an application for the first generic version of Viagra, the first drug approved by the federal government for erectile dysfunction.
The FDA said the product is available in 60 mg, 40 mg, and 40 mg tablets for daily use.
Viagra is the first drug to be approved for treating erectile dysfunction (ED).
“ED is a common condition that affects millions of men worldwide. There is a need for effective and safe treatments that improve sexual function in men,” said Dr. Sidney Taurel, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
Viagra was developed as a treatment for male impotence. Its introduction is expected to increase awareness of ED.
In March 2018, the FDA approved Viagra for sale in 120 mg, 40 mg, and 60 mg tablets in the United States.
Viagra can be taken only as needed and it does not require a prescription.
In October 2018, FDA advisory committee recommended the approval of a generic version of the drug for daily use, which is not available in 60 mg, 40 mg, and 40 mg tablets.
The FDA said the approval of the product does not change the drug’s efficacy or safety.
“While the FDA is working with manufacturers to determine the most appropriate treatment for the condition being treated, the approval of generic versions of the drug will not change efficacy or safety,” said Dr. Richard M. Carter, deputy director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The agency said Viagra has been approved by the FDA for men with ED, although the FDA has not approved it for women.
“This is not the first drug approved by the FDA to be approved for treatment of ED,” said Dr. Carter, deputy director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
“The FDA is not the first body to approve treatment of ED,” Carter said.

A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order against a drug manufacturer over allegations that it illegally marketed and sold unapproved versions of Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The court ordered Pfizer Inc. to immediately stop selling and supply its generic version of Viagra to patients, while it will continue to make the product available to patients as needed. The drug maker alleges that it did not seek FDA approval for Viagra and instead purchased from generic competitors, including Lilly ICOS Pharmaceuticals Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline. The FDA is investigating the allegations and will decide the case as early as possible. It is unclear exactly how many patients are affected by this legal battle.
“This case is unique in that it is unique in that it is unique,” said John A. Schmitt, a former U. S. District Judge who is overseeing the case. “It is unprecedented. The FDA is being forced to review the FDA’s approval of Viagra because the drug has no approved labeling to promote safety.”
According to court documents, a Pfizer employee reported that one of the company’s doctors recommended that patients take Viagra rather than the brand name drug. That recommendation was not made publicly, according to court documents. An FDA official declined to comment on the allegations.
The lawsuit against Pfizer is currently being investigated by the FDA. The company did not respond to a request for comment.

U. Attorney’s OfficeDistrict Court for the District of MinnesotaAttorney’s Office U.Federal agents with the FDA said they seized more than $10 million worth of Viagra from the company on Oct. 6, 2017, but only in the United States.
“The FDA’s investigation of the allegations against Pfizer and the company’s practices in the production of unapproved drugs like Viagra is unique,” the company said in a statement.
“Our investigation is ongoing,” it added.
Viagra is the brand name of the erectile dysfunction drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition that affects more than 2 million men worldwide. It is also a prescription medicine. Viagra and its generic equivalent, sildenafil, were approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration in 1998 and 2003, respectively. Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction. A generic version of sildenafil is also available, but is not approved for the treatment of ED.
The FDA will continue to investigate and bring charges against Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra and its generic competitors, including Lilly ICOS Pharmaceuticals Inc. They are accused of conspiring to illegally market and sell unapproved Viagra, which is not approved by the FDA.
The complaint against Pfizer also alleges that GlaxoSmithKline and ICOS Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Viagra, and two other companies, the U. Food and Drug Administration and the U. Department of Justice have engaged in a multi-state criminal conspiracy to violate the U. Constitution and the Constitution of the United States, including the U. District Court for the District of Minnesota.
FDA officials said their investigation is ongoing, and Pfizer officials are being asked to stop selling and supply Viagra, while Pfizer continues to make the generic version of the drug.
